Warranted 1878. A Masonic Lodge Meeting in Clevedon, Somerset.
It's a common misconception that you have to be well-off to become a Freemason. However, It costs less than you might think!
What does it cost to be a Freemason?
If you decide to join Eldon Lodge, you will be asked for certain fees, which under United Grand Lodge of England rules, have to be paid prior to joining. These will include a one-off joining fee and amount to approximately £200 (Please note: the exact figure can change but this will be confirmed for you prior to you joining).
You will then be expected to pay the annual subscription levied by the Lodge. The fee for Eldon Lodge is currently just £50 a year, starting at our October meeting. Your subscription is payable by the 1st October and a direct debit option is available upon request. If you join part way through a year, the subscription is reduced on a pro-rata basis.
Most Lodge meetings have an official ceremony followed by a dinner. You may choose to dine with your brethren or go home after the Lodge meeting. The dining cost for the meal is currently £16 which includes Starter, Main, Dessert, Cheese Board and Coffee. A very affordably priced and fully stocked bar is available for members to use.
If you invite any Masonic guests, it is normal that, as their host, you would pay their dining fee, which for Eldon Lodge is £16 and this is payable on the day.
Most Lodges will have a ‘dress code’ which requests that members wear a dark lounge suit, shirt with a white collar, a black tie and black shoes. In time, certain items of regalia will be required, which initially will not be expensive, and often, there is the opportunity to buy used regalia at very little cost.
From time to time, many Lodges have a special evening, or daytime event, specifically to raise money for charity. You will never be pressurised into attending them or to donate money at these events if you are unable to, or prefer not to. However, it is hoped that you will participate in the Lodge’s efforts to raise money for the various charities they adopt.
Freemasons are encouraged to donate money to charity, dependent upon their means. You will never be pressurised and it is stressed to all candidates when joining that giving to charity must not be at the detriment to you or your family.
